HM Passport Office has shared a new alert
HM Passport Office has issued a warning to those applying for new or replacement travel documents, as they could experience hold-ups. Currently, a standard adult passport for those aged 16 and over costs £94.50 when submitted online, or £107 via the traditional paper application.
To apply online and cut costs, you’ll require a digital photo. This can be obtained from a photo booth or shop before starting your passport application, or snapped using your own device while completing the form.
If you opt for a photo booth, you’ll be given a code to enter during your online application. However, the Passport Office has warned that specific requirements must be met if you want to receive your passport without unnecessary delays.
In a recent alert on X, formerly Twitter, HM Passport Office said: “A rejected photo can delay your application. Make sure your photo has a plain, light background. Shows your full face with a neutral expression and has no shadows, filters, or headwear.”
Further guidance on Gov.uk states that your photo must be sharp and in focus, in colour, unedited by computer software, at least 600 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall, and between 50KB and 10MB in size. The image should not include other objects or people, should not show ‘red eye’, should be captured against a plain and light-coloured backdrop, and should stand out clearly from the background.
And unless it’s absolutely essential, you should try to avoid wearing glasses. If you must wear them, make sure they’re not tinted or sunglasses and that your vision isn’t hindered by the frames, glare, reflection, or shadow.
Provided your application meets all the requirements, you should receive your new or replacement passport within three weeks.
